5 Days of Inspiration – Day 1

Inspiration comes in many forms, and on this first day of inspiration I have found someone just following their dreams.

His name is Magnus Walker. One of his companies renovates Porsches, but he puts his own flair into them. I am inspired by his story because he does it his way and at the same time has given back to the art area of Los Angeles and has helped gentrify the area and redevelop it. He is being awesome and following his dreams.

If you have 30 minutes watch this excellent documentary on what he does with Porsches.

5 Days of Inspiration – The Beginning

Since this is my personal blog I can get personal right? For the past year I have been in a struggle to find the right direction of my business and for my future. In December I decided it was time to focus down and come back to my roots in media production and building great brands through video. I say this because I have been drawn to some great stories recently, some stories of inspiration, and this video really hit me this weekend.

So after watching it what are your thoughts? Mine are to go be awesome.

For the next 5 days I am going to share some stories of people being awesome and just living their passions. This is just the beginning.

Apple and not failing

Verizon announced their last quarters numbers:

The company activated 9.8 million smartphones in the fourth quarter, including 6.2 million iPhones, with most of the rest being Android devices. Tablet sales doubled as compared to the prior quarter, Shammo said.

Over 63% of Verizon’s sales this last quarter where from 3 models. That is a whole lot of not failing going on.

Ultra HD the next marketing fad

Sony 56″ 4k OLED
As the 2013 consumer electronics show wraps up we heard a lot about the new Ultra HD televisions. They are marketing them as UHDTV, and promising them to be the next great thing. We all will want them is what the savvy marketers are implying.

Even Samsung got into the game with a hideously designed 85 inch S9000.

Bad design and who has room for that easel?

Why am I so negative on this though has to do with we are years away from commercially available 4K playback. There is nothing available today to play 4k. There is content out there that has been shot and edited in 4K and I imagine it looks amazing. In fact Sony had an announcement,

“Mastered in 4K” Blu-ray releases will feature titles—such as The Amazing Spider-Man™, Total Recall, The Karate Kid, Battle: Los Angeles and The Other Guys—sourced from pristine 4K masters and presented at high-bitrate 1080p resolution, with expanded color showcasing more of the wide range of rich color contained in the original source. When upscaled via the Sony 4K Ultra HD TVs, these discs serve as an ideal way for consumers to experience near-4K picture quality. SPHE also plans to utilize available high quality 4K masters for select upcoming new release Blu-ray titles. “Mastered in 4K” Blu-ray Discs can be played on all existing Blu-ray Disc players.

Yes currently we have to take a Blu-Ray and make it bigger to fit on a 4K television because 4K is about 4 times bigger than the largest HD image which is 1080p.

Don’t get me wrong I would support 4k as the production gear is there, but no one has any sort of playback system. You can forget about live television productions in 4K as we are years away from that as well. In fact 720p (which is smaller that 1080p) is used by some networks including FOX. Hopefully h.265 will help, but I just don’t see much immediate future for 4K.

4K another marketing fad.

The great presenter

Most of the time during those rehearsals, Ken and I had nothing to do except sit in the then empty audience and watch The Master Presenter at work — crafting his keynote. What a privilege to be a spectator during that process. At Apple, we were actually all students, not just spectators. When I see other companies clumsily announce products these days, I realize again how much the rest of the world lost now that Steve is gone.

This is a great read on the unveiling of Safari. I do totally agree that he was a master presenter of the likes that we don’t see in tech companies today.
